Overview[]
Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated is a modernized take on the original formula present in past incarnations. While previous incarnations were comedic in nature, this series has a generally heavier tone, incorporating elements of horror, romance, and drama, with Scooby and Shaggy serving as the primary comedic reliefs.
Unlike the previous series, the events in the episodes are united by an overarching storyline. Set in Crystal Cove, the "most hauntedest place on Earth," Mystery Inc. unmasks criminals disguised as monsters while interacting with the elusive Mr. E and uncovering the previous Mystery Incorporated group. The second season focuses on uncovering the centuries-old curse plaguing Crystal Cove, thus being one of the first series to incorporate real supernatural entities as a major story element. While the series initially follows the formula set by past incarnations, with each episode focusing on a particular monster, the series slightly deviates from the formula near the end as it begins to focus less on fake monsters and more on the greater curse.
A larger, more cohesive storyline allows for greater character development, as the members of Mystery Inc. have more unique individuals personalities and interact with each other in different ways. Throughout the storyline, Fred and Daphne develop a rocky romantic relationship before finally uniting in the end, while Shaggy and Velma likewise begin together but choose to end their relationship later on. In addition, each member has unique relationships with their parents as well as other secondary characters, who place societal pressures on them and encourage them to behave a certain way.

Notes/trivia[]
- Matthew Lillard, who had starred as Shaggy in the live action Scooby Doo film, assumes the role of Shaggy due to original actor, Casey Kasem's, retirement. Kasem still remained, however, as the voice of Shaggy's father.
- The names and appearances of Mystery Inc.'s parents differ from previous incarnations.
- This is the first television series in the franchise to not air on any of the major broadcast networks.
- This series is now set in Crystal Cove, instead of Coolsville.
- There is a different version of the opening in episodes 29–30, with Hot Dog Water instead of Daphne.
- This incarnation has a much darker tone than any other incarnation, which resulted in the next series having the opposite.
- In 2013, Campbell's Condensed Soup had limited edition tins with Mystery Inc. in their designs for the series (except for Scooby).
- The juvenile delinquents seen at the start of the episode bear a resemblance to the lead characters in the US sitcom That 70’s Show.
- This is the first show in which Scooby uses proper English for his words; in all of the previous shows, he used R's for his words.
- This is the first incarnation to feature an overarching story and feature a serial naming each episodes as "Chapters" from 1-52. It is also the first incarnation to feature ongoing relationship drama between the characters.
- This incarnation pays homage to the horror genre, drawing on many works from film, television and literature in both parodic and serious ways, from horror movie classics like A Nightmare on Elm Street, modern films such as Saw, television series Twin Peaks, and the works of H. P. Lovecraft, alongside the classic monster horror movies shown in previous incarnations.
- In the second season, the central story arc evolves to heavily feature the use of Babylonian mythology, exploring the Anunnaki, the Babylonian and modern pseudo-scientific concepts of Nibiru, and the writings of Zecharia Sitchin.
- Other Hanna-Barbera characters occasionally guest-star, including Captain Caveman, Jabberjaw, Speed Buggy, the Funky Phantom, Blue Falcon and Dynomutt, and more.
- Linda Cardellini who portrayed Velma in the two live action theatrical films, appears in this incarnation as the voice of Hot Dog Water.
- This incarnation set a new record for the most episodes in the franchise with 52 episodes. This was then equaled by the next series, Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!.
- Thirty six episodes of the series were shown back to back (and out of order) as part of Foxtel Australia's "12 Days to Christmas" on 21 December 2021. No other Scooby-Doo series was shown as part of this promotion.
- This is the last television series featuring Mindy Cohn as the voice of Velma. Her reason for leaving the role was due to her struggle with breast cancer. Despite her recovery, she was never asked by Warner Bros. to return to the role and was instead replaced by Kate Micucci for the remainder of the franchise.
- It is worth noting that the television series Haven debuted just mere months after Mystery Incorporated did. Both are supernatural dramas set at cursed coastal towns with callbacks to old horror films. Both involve similar relationship-based plot elements and usually end with one mystery solved, often only to find the main overarching mystery more perplexing.
- Mr. E name's pronunciation sounds like Mystery
